DALKEITH
On an elevated part of Dalkeith amongst the wide shady streets filled with an ecclectic mix of fine old character homes, period revivals and modern architecture this home has been designed to blend into the streetscape.
At the street front is a traditional gatehouse with a pyramid shaped roof that seems to float above the solid masonry walls from being supported off small culumns at each corner. The roof above the balcony is similarly supported. Here the visual device is from a beam of cantilevered masonry at the forward edge of the balcony interupting the scale of the window behind to create intrique. The theme of "flying" beams is also evident in the front fence , above the undercroft garage entry and across the rear of the alfresco area.
The home is over three levels with a substantial undercroft. The ground floor contains the timeless delight of a library with fireplace, a study and theatre at the front with the kitchen and combined family dining and alfresco area beyond overlooking the pool and spa.
The upper level contains multiple bedrooms and associated ensuites around a circular staircase and adjacent lift.
A lot of accomodation with considerable but subtle appeal. All designed to delight without being radical.
